Language exchanges

What is a language exchange?

The process is very simple. At most exchanges, you receive a sticker on which you write down your name, your native language and the language(s) you would like to speak. You can look for people whose native language corresponds to the languages you would like to practise. You can always ask our coordinators for help if you have difficulty finding a suitable participant. At the few events where we do not work with stickers, our coordinators assign the tables so everybody can join a suitable group. A few minutes later the event turns into a multilingual social gathering where you can meet international friends.

At the Flag Tandem Party in Umbracle, you receive the flag of your country / native tongue at the entrance and look for participants who speak the language you would like to practise. That way the diversity of our participants is shown through the flags.

What is the cost of the exchanges?

Most events are free of charge. Some special events, such as painting and ceramic classes, have a cost for the materials provided by VLE.

What is the difference between the language exchanges on weekdays?

We recommend every exchange, but one can suit you more than the others depending on your interests, the area you live in or where you like to gather with friends.

  • Monday: recommended if you like a calm atmosphere and live near the university quarter (Blasco Ibáñez). On a busy day, around 80–100 people participate.
  • Tuesday: people of every age (from 18 to 70) participate. You can practise different languages and talk about various topics. On a busy day there are around 120–150 participants. A unique opportunity to network.
  • Wednesday: combines a language exchange with salsa and bachata classes. First the language exchange (about an hour), then classes for beginners; everybody can participate because the instructor explains the basics. At the end, the professional dancers can conquer the dance floor.
  • Thursday: popular amongst local students, Erasmus and exchange students. The event is known for its quiz covering various topics: 20 questions, and every correct answer is rewarded with a shot. About 140 people participate.
  • Flag Tandem + Party in Umbracle/Mya: an interactive language exchange where everybody receives the flag of their native language and looks for people to talk to. In winter about 150–180 people participate, in summer around 400–600.

Which languages are spoken during the exchanges?

All languages can be spoken. Usually many participants speak English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Other languages are spoken when both native speakers and learners are present, for example Portuguese, Russian or Chinese. At the Flag Tandem Party all languages and nationalities are present, recognisable by their flags.

Do the exchanges require a certain level of proficiency?

Everybody is welcome. We don't divide people into groups by proficiency. If you like practising and speaking various languages, our events are the place to be, from native speakers to beginners.

How do I register for the exchanges?

Go to valencialanguageexchange.com, choose a date that suits you in the calendar, fill in the event form, and you are ready to participate.
